ทำนาย

Borrowed from Middle Khmer °daṃnāya, °daṃnāyya (“forecast; prediction; prophecy”), extended forms of Middle Khmer dāya (“to interpret; to portend; to presage"”), whence Thai ทาย (taai). Cognate with Modern Khmer ទំនាយ (tumniəy), Lao ທຳນາຍ (tham nāi).

     งาช้างต้นพลายสวัสดิมงคลลุ่ยข้างซ้ายแลโหรว่าห้ามยาตรา

     The left tusk of the royal elephant Phlai Sawatdimongkhon cracked, and the astrologer interpreted [this omen] as a warning [not] to march [forth].
