Etymology
From Pali nissita (“depending on; hanging on; living by means of; supported by”) or perhaps shortened from Pali nissitaka (“adherent; dependent”). Cognate with Khmer និស្សិត (nɨhsət, “higher education student”).

Usage notes
- In modern usage, the present term specifically refers to students at some universities, such as Chulalongkorn University, Kasetsart University, etc. Students at the other tertiary education institutions are called นักศึกษา (nák-sʉ̀k-sǎa).
- Early childhood, primary, or secondary education students are called นักเรียน (nák-riian).
