Etymology

Compound of ผู้ (pûu, agent noun prefix) +‎ คุม (kum, “to control; to guard”) +‎ วิญญาณ (win-yaan, “soul”). Coined by Waleeporn Wangsuekul, translator of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, first published in 2001, from the fact that dementors are employed to guard Azkaban and can suck souls.[1]
