Etymology

From Proto-Tai *ŋinᴬ (to hear).[1]

In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Lao ຍິນ (nyin), Tai Dam ꪉꪲꪙ, Shan ငိၼ်း (ngín), ယိၼ်း (yín) or ၺိၼ်း (nyín), Ahom 𑜂𑜢𑜃𑜫 (ṅin).

In Northern Tai, cognate with Zhuang nyi.

Ccmpare Proto-Austronesian *dəŋəʀ (whence Paiwan ladenga or langeda, Malay dengar, Tagalog dinig).
