From Proto-Tai *rɤmᴮ (“shade”),^[1] from Old Chinese 陰 (OC *qrɯm, “overcast, shade”).

Cognate with Northern Thai ᩁᩫ᩠᩵ᨾ, Lao ຮົ່ມ (hom), Lü ᦷᦣᧄᧈ (hom¹), Shan ႁူမ်ႈ (hūum), Ahom 𑜍𑜤𑜪 (ruṃ), Zhuang raemh, Zuojiang Zhuang loemq.
