From Proto-Tai *ʔaːnᴬ (saddle).[1]

In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Lao ອານ (ʼān), Shan ဢၢၼ် (ʼǎan), Ahom 𑜒𑜃𑜫 (ʼan)

In Northern Tai, cognate with Zhuang an.

Compare Chinese (OC *[ʔ]ˤa[n] or *qaːn, “saddle”).[2]
