From Sanskrit अवीचि (avīci, literally “waveless: having no waves, without waves”). Cognate with Old Khmer *ʼavīci, ʼavici, ʼavaci, °ʼaviciya°; Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer ʼavīci°, ʼavicī°; Angkorian Old Khmer ʼavīci, ʼavicīya; Modern Khmer អវីចី (ʼaʼviicəy), Lü ᦀᦞᦲᦈᦲ (˙ʼviiṫsii).
