From Proto-Tai *ɡawꟲ (owl).[1]

In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Lao ເຄົ້າ (khao), Shan ၵဝ်ႉ (kâ̰o), Tai Dam ꪹꪁ꫁ꪱ, Ahom 𑜀𑜧 (kaw).

In other Tai, cognate with Zuojiang Zhuang guq (Longzhou dialect)[2] or kaeuj in duo'kaeuj (owl) (Daxin dialect).[2]
