Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *liəᴬ⁴ (“to lick”), from Proto-Tai *C̬.lwiəᴬ (“to lick”). Cognate with Lao ເລຍ (līa), Northern Thai ᩃ᩠ᨿᩮ, Lü ᦵᦟ (le), Tai Dam ꪩꪸ, Shan လေး (lée), Tai Nüa ᥘᥥᥰ (lë), Ahom 𑜎𑜦 (le), Zhuang riz, Nong Zhuang laix.
