Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *taɰᴬ² (“gizzard; kidney”), from Proto-Tai *p.taɰᴬ (“gizzard”). Cognate with Lao ໃຕ (tai), ໄຕ (tai), or ເຕີ (tœ̄, “gizzard; kidney”), Lü ᦺᦎ (ṫay, “gizzard; kidney”), Tai Dam ꪻꪔ (“gizzard”), Tai Dón ꪻꪔ (“gizzard”), Phake တၞ် (taü, “kidney”), Zhuang daw (“gizzard”), Saek เต๋อ (“gizzard; kidney”).
