Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *taɰᴬ² (gizzard; kidney), from Proto-Tai *p.taɰᴬ (gizzard). Cognate with Lao ໃຕ (tai), ໄຕ (tai), or ເຕີ (tœ̄, gizzard; kidney), ᦺᦎ (ṫay, gizzard; kidney), Tai Dam ꪻꪔ (gizzard), Tai Dón ꪻꪔ (gizzard), Phake တၞ် (taü, kidney), Zhuang daw (gizzard), Saek เต๋อ (gizzard; kidney). Compare Shan တႂ် (tǎue, induration or callous caused by friction of the skin) for sense 2.
