According to MED, from ကန် (kan, “lake, pond”) +‎ စွန်း (cwan:, “to be in excess”), though the gloss for the second syllable appears semantically tenuous. It appears possible that the second syllable is instead invoking the "stained" sense (which MED implicitly supports as an alternative possibility, given its assignment of derivatives such as ကန်စွန်းဥ (kancwan:u., “sweet potato”) to that sense), and it is also likely that the second syllable is an etymologically distinct term referring to vegetables, of unclear further origin. Note also similarities of the second syllable to ပုစွန် (pu.cwan, “crustacean”).
