From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s-grum (contracted, stunted, dwarfish); cognate with Mizo tum (to jump) (STEDT). Note also strong phonetic and semantic similarities to Old Chinese (OC *krɯːmʔ, *ɡrɯːmʔ, “to decrease, diminish”).
