Etymology

The first syllable, ခင် (hkang), is from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kaŋ (“father, grandfather; honorific term for males”), whence perhaps Old Chinese 公 (OC *kloːŋ, “male; duke”), and is also found in ခင်ဗျား (hkangbya:, “you (polite, used by males)”). The second syllable, ပွန်း (pwan:), is from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *bwa (“grandmother”), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *pʷa-n ~ *bʷa-n (“idem”), whence ဘွား (bhwa:, “grandmother”) and Old Chinese 婆 (OC *baːl, “old woman; grandmother”) (STEDT).
