ညှိုး

Burmese

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ɲ̊ó/
  • Romanization: MLCTS: hnyui: • ALA-LC: ññhuiʺ • BGN/PCGN: hnyo: • Okell: hnyoù

Etymology 1

From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s-n(j/r)əw (dark, withered, evil); compare Jingpho [script needed] (nyui, faded, wilted, withered) (STEDT).

Despite MED erroneously grouping the "second finger" sense in Etymology 2 with the "wilt" sense, the two are etymologically distinct from each other, as corroborated by STEDT.

Etymology 2

Sagart (2019) identifies this element as cognate with Chinese (shǒu, hand) and reconstructs Proto-Sino-Tibetan *C̥.nuʔ (finger) as their common etymon.

The compound also appears outside of Lolo-Burmese in Proto-Naish *lak ŋi (finger).
