From တောင်ပြုန်း (taungprun:, Taungbyon) + ပွဲ (pwai:, public event, festival), i.e. the festival held in Taungbyon village in central Myanmar. The village's name is traditionally interpreted as a compound of တောင် (taung, mountain) +‎ ပြုန်း (prun:, to be worn away).
