တံငါ

Burmese

Etymology

MED derives the word from တံ (tam, liquid) +‎ ငါ (nga, I, me), apparently as "the one in the water", though this seems semantically tenuous. It appears more likely that the first component invokes the "rod" sense, and the second component is a variant of ငါး (nga:, fish).
