Etymology
According to MED, from တံ (tam, “accumulation; elephant with single tusk”) + ဆိပ် (hcip, “port, terminal”), though this appears semantically difficult. It seems more likely that the first syllable is rather invoking the "rod" sense (as "branding" was traditionally done with hot rods).
