Etymology

နေ (ne, sun) +‎ ထွက် (htwak, to come out). Chinese 日出 (rìchū, “sunrise”) is an exact cognate by components (though whether both terms were inherited from Proto-Sino-Tibetan or formed independently from their respective cognate roots is unknown).
