From Proto-Karen *nejᴬ, from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ku-ni(k) (“sun; day”). Cognate with Eastern Pwo ဏီ (nì), Western Pwo နံၩ, Pa'o Karen နီꩻ (ni). Compare Western Kayah ꤗꤟꤢꤪꤑꤢꤩ꤭ (mo̤anyē).
