ပျဉ်း

Burmese

Etymology

The word, as standalone, is not given etymology by STEDT (pyâñ "tough; stupid"), though STEDT does derive it, as found in the compound နားပျဉ်း (na:pyany:, drooping earlobe), from a Proto-Tibeto-Burman *bjaŋ (ear, earlobe, flat thing), whence also Mizo beng (ear). Luce 1981 appears to compare Old Chinese (OC *pʰen, *benʔ, *peːnʔ, *beːnʔ, “flat and thin; board, table”).
