ဖြီး

Burmese

Etymology

According to STEDT, from Proto-Burmish *prəj (to comb, brush), from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *ʔ-gʷəj-s (comb (for hair)), a root with a phonologically unstable initial. See the probably-related ဘီး (bhi:, comb) for more.

It is unclear if the "plentiful" or "bluff" senses are related to the "comb" sense (and the former two are pronounced differently in modern dialects from the latter), though MED groups them together.
