Etymology

From Proto-Karen *mɛʔᴰ (“eye, face”) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *mɛʔ¹ (“idem”) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mjək (“eye”). Cognate with Pa'o Karen မဲ့, Western Pwo မ့ၬ, Eastern Pwo မေံ (mèQ). Compare Western Kayah ꤗꤢꤧ꤬ꤞꤢꤧ꤬ (màethàe).
