Burmese

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /wɛ̀/
  • Romanization: MLCTS: wai • ALA-LC: vayʻ • BGN/PCGN: wè • Okell: we

Etymology 1

Probably from a Proto-Lolo-Burmese *way (to buy), with further derivation unclear (STEDT) with only Proto-Naish *hwal as an obvious cognate. Perhaps from the same word family as Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g/m/s-laj ~ r/s-lej ~ b-rej (to exchange, buy) (whence Old Chinese (OC *lal, “to change places”), (OC *leːɡs, *leɡ, “to exchange”)); the latter Sino-Tibetan root is known for variable prefixes and -ay/-ey vocalism.
