Burmese
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /wɛ̀/
- Romanization: MLCTS: wai • ALA-LC: vayʻ • BGN/PCGN: wè • Okell: we
Etymology 1
Probably from a Proto-Lolo-Burmese *way (“to buy”), with further derivation unclear (STEDT) with only Proto-Naish *hwal as an obvious cognate. Perhaps from the same word family as Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g/m/s-laj ~ r/s-lej ~ b-rej (“to exchange, buy”) (whence Old Chinese 移 (OC *lal, “to change places”), 易 (OC *leːɡs, *leɡ, “to exchange”)); the latter Sino-Tibetan root is known for variable prefixes and -ay/-ey vocalism.
