Etymology 2

The "strength" sense is derived from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *ʔan (strength), whence also Jingpho [script needed] (ʔàn, in full strength). The Tibeto-Burman root bears strong resemblance to Proto-Tibeto-Burman *k/l/ʔ-wan (swift, strong, violent) (whence the second syllable of Jingpho [script needed] (ǹ-gùn, strength); Old Chinese (OC *ɡron, “force; fist”), though connected by STEDT, is probably not related), and may be allofamic with it (STEDT).

The "dice" sense is not given etymology by STEDT (an "die"), and not mentioned by Luce 1981. MED groups "dice" with "strength" (as well as "vomit"), though it is unclear if it is related to either term.
