አፍንጫ

Amharic

Etymology

Unknown. Kogan rejects Appleyard's suggestion of a connection to Proto-Semitic *ʔanp-, in part because of evidence that the initial consonant was originally /w/, but mentions a phonologically problematic suggestion from Bulakh that connects the term with ተናፈጠ (tänaffäṭä, blow one's nose).
