Etymology 1

From Angkorian Old Khmer pañ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *paɲʔ (to shoot). Cognate with Khmu ປິຍ (piny), Halang pĕng, Mon ပန်, Pacoh pánh, Vietnamese bắn and Central Nicobarese [Nancowry] fòin (crossbow).
