Inherited from Proto-Austroasiatic *loːjʔ (to wade; to swim). Cognate with Mon လုဲ, Vietnamese lội, Riang luj². Doublet of លយ (lɔɔy, to​ float). Compare Thai ลุย (lui, to wade), Thai ลอย (lɔɔi, to float).
