Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Vietic *loːjʔ (to wade), Proto-Austroasiatic *loːjʔ ~ *lɔːjʔ (to wade; to swim). Cognate with Khmer លុយ (luy), Mon လုဲ, Riang luj². Compare also Proto-Tai *loːjᴬ (to swim) (whence Thai ลอย (lɔɔi)).
