ἀρήγω

Ancient Greek

Etymology

According to Beekes, from a Proto-Indo-European *h₂reh₁ǵ- (to help, support). Cognates include Proto-Germanic *rōkijaną (to take care of).

Latin regō (to rule, govern), Ancient Greek ὀρέγω (orégō, to reach, stretch out) derive instead from the apparently-unrelated Proto-Indo-European *h₃reǵ- (to straighten).[1]
