Etymology

Apparently originally the masculine nominative plural of an otherwise unattested adjective ἄνεως (áneōs) (perhaps from ἀν- (an-) +‎ αὔω (aúō, “to shout”)), and in some contexts still interpretable as such; but in other contexts it can only be an adverb.
