From ἀνα- (ana-) + Proto-Indo-European *h₁e-h₁oǵ-h₂e, perfect of *h₁eǵ- (“to say”) (compare ἠμί (ēmí), Latin āiō, Old Armenian ասեմ (asem)).

The present meaning, combined with the fact that certain perfect subjunctive, optative, and imperative forms as well as certain pluperfect indicative forms have the same endings as present-tense forms, led to a reinterpretation of ἀνωγ- (anōg-) as a present stem, resulting in the following forms:
