According to Beekes, from ἁβρός (habrós, delicate, graceful). However, a Semitic origin has been proposed, comparing this word with Hebrew חֲבֵרָה (ḥăḇērāh, female friend, female companion) and Classical Syriac ܚܒܪܐ (ḥaḇrā, male friend, male companion).
