ἐρυσίβη
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- ἐρυθίβη (eruthíbē)
Etymology
The stem of this word is also found in ἐρύσιμον (erúsimon, “hedge-mustard”) and ἐρυσίπελας (erusípelas, “erysipelas”). Traditionally considered an old s-enlargement of ἐρυθρός (eruthrós, “red”), which can be found in Latin russus (“red, reddish-brown”) and Lithuanian raūsvas (“red”). However, Furnée suggests a Pre-Greek origin, because of the alternation of σ/θ and the typical long -ῑ-: this hypothesis is supported also by Beekes.
