"Probably a causative or iterative-intensive" of ἔχθω (ékhthō) according to Beekes, who adduces a number of parallel cases such as φοβέω (phobéō) / φέβομαι (phébomai), θροέω (throéō) / θρέομαι (thréomai), and others.
