From Proto-Indo-European *h₁órsos (bottom, arse). Cognates include Middle Armenian ոռ (oṙ), Old Irish err, Old English ærs (English arse, ass),[1] and perhaps Hittite 𒅈𒊏𒀸 (arraš). See also οὐρᾱ́ (ourā́, tail).
