Etymology

From ῥύπτω (rhúptō, to cleanse, to wash) and the suffix -μα (-ma).

Compare typologically Russian мы́ло (mýlo) akin to мыть (mytʹ) akin to помо́и (pomói). Also compare native σμῆμα (smêma) < σμάω (smáō). Also compare English lye << Proto-Indo-European *lewh₃-.
