Etymology
Supposedly from the 唐音 (tōon, “Tōon reading”, literally “Tang sound”) of 脚榻子.[1][2] The use of 立 in the spelling 脚立 is likely an example of phono-semantic matching, utilizing 立 as ateji based on the pronunciation of the verb 立つ (tatsu), and also using its meaning "to stand".
