From Old Japanese, from Proto-Japonic *noka. The kanji spelling has been used to phonetically spell nuka in the Man'yōshū of 759 CE, as in 雨毛落 (AME2=mo PUR-An-u=ka, the rain doesn't fall?) (Omodaka 1967, p. 552).
