Etymology
From 筈 (hazu, “notch”) + 押し (oshi), the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 押す (osu, “push”).

Usage notes
So-called for the shape of the hands, with the thumb extended and the other fingers clenched, forming a notch.
