Usage notes

  • Until c. 2020, ミーム was rarely used in reference to Japan's own internet memes. The traditional wording combines general terms like ネタ (neta, joke material), 話題(わだい) (wadai, topic of conversation), and 流行(はや) (hayaru, to be popular) with clarification (on the Internet, from Twitter, etc.): ネタとして使(つか)われる画像(がぞう) (neta to shite tsukawareru gazō, image that is used as joke material), ネットの流行(はや)ネタ (netto no hayari neta, online trending joke).
