ミーム • (mīmu)
Usage notes
- Until c. 2020, ミーム was rarely used in reference to Japan's own internet memes. The traditional wording combines general terms like ネタ (neta, “joke material”), 話題 (wadai, “topic of conversation”), and 流行る (hayaru, “to be popular”) with clarification (on the Internet, from Twitter, etc.): ネタとして使われる画像 (neta to shite tsukawareru gazō, “image that is used as joke material”), ネットの流行りネタ (netto no hayari neta, “online trending joke”).
Derived terms
- 猫ミーム (neko mīmu)
