Glyph origin
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声): semantic 虫 (“insect; creature”) + phonetic 宅 (OC *r'aːɡ).
Etymology 1
A Min pronunciation with voiceless initial (癡駕反), attested in 《嶺表録異》 ("Records of Peculiarities in Ling[nan]"; [late 9th c. CE] by 劉恂 (Liu Xun); lost, quoted in Taiping Guangji 465), was possibly related to high-register-toned Sino-Vietnamese reading trá.
