攝氏

See also: 摂氏 and 摄氏

Chinese

phonetic clan name; maiden name
trad. (攝氏)
simp. (摄氏)

Etymology

Abbreviation of 攝爾修斯摄尔修斯 (from Swedish Celsius) + (shì, “family”).

Pronunciation

Adjective

攝氏

  1. Celsius; centigrade
昨天攝氏昨天摄氏  ―  Zuótiān Shèshì jiǔ dù.  ―  Yesterday it was nine degrees Celsius.

Usage notes

攝氏 may be placed before or after the number of degrees in Chinese. Placing it before the number of degrees (as in the example above) gives the sentence a literary and poetic feel; however, this usage is sometimes frowned upon by language authorities, for example in the Modern Standard Chinese Dictionary (現代漢語規範詞典).
