Etymology

Compound of (mizo, ditch, gutter, drain; groove) +‎ 蕎麦 (soba, buckwheat),[1][2][3][4] from the way the plant would grow along the ditches of rice paddies, and resembles the buckwheat plant.[4]

First referenced in a work from 1712.[1]
