Etymology

In one theory, 御座 (goza, “throne”, literally “noble seat”), from the sense of wealthy people sitting on it. Kōjien says, "meaning a thing strewn upon the throne sat on by a noble person".[1]

Nihon Kokugo Daijiten says it may be an abbreviation of 茣蓙筵 (gozamushiro);[2] speculatively, this could align with the above said by Kōjien, i.e. by being from 御座 (goza, “throne”) +‎ 筵 (mushiro, “mat”), namely aligning with the idea of a mat strewn on a throne.

茣 is an ateji, and 蓙 is a kokuji.[3]
