Etymology

Compound of 蘆(あし) (ashi, “reed, rush”) + 名(な) (na, “fame, reputation”). Originally the name of a place in the Miura Peninsula[1] (current Kanagawa Prefecture; see 芦名(あしな) (Ashina)) presumably known for reeds.
