Etymology
The first syllable 雲/云 (yún) (pronounced wan4 in Cantonese) is possibly cognate with Zhuang vunz (“person”) (Shao, 2015). There are many toponyms in Guangdong with 雲/云 (yún) as their first character.
On the other hand, the second syllable 浮 (fú) is possibly cognate with Zhuang faexbaeuz (“Pleioblastus amarus”, a plant commonly found in the area, known as 苦竹 in Chinese) (Shao, 2015), so 雲浮/云浮 (Yúnfú) may mean "the people who plant Pleioblastus amarus", making the toponym possibly phono-semantic matching of Kra-Dai substrate words.
