Inherited from Sanskrit धूम (dhūma). Cognate with Assamese ধোঁৱা (dhü̃a), Bengali ধোঁয়া (dhō̃ẇa), Bhojpuri धूआँ (dhūā̃), Maithili धूआँ (dhūā̃), Odia ଧୂଆଁ (dhuā̃).
