From Proto-Karen *thwiᴮ (“dog”) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *thwi² (“idem”) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *d-kʷəj-n (“dog”). Cognate with Pa'o Karen ထွီႏ, S'gaw Karen ထွံၣ် (hṭweè), Western Pwo ထွံၪ.
