Inherited from Old Javanese batu (“grain”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *batu, from Proto-Austronesian *batu. Doublet of ꦮꦠꦸ (watu).
- For the sense of battery, compare to dialectal Chinese 電石/电石 (“battery”, literally “electric stone”) and Japanese 電石 (erekutoretto, “electret”).
