파찰음
Korean
Etymology
Sino-Korean word from 破擦音, from 破 (“break”) + 擦 (“rub”) + 音 (“sound”).
Compare 파열음(破裂音) (payeoreum, “plosive”) and 마찰음(摩擦音) (machareum, “fricative”).
Pronunciation
- (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈpʰa̠(ː)t͡ɕʰa̠ɾɯm]
- Phonetic hangul: [파(ː)차름]
- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
